Iranian Pistachio from the Start up to Now
With regard to the ever increasing interest that the international trade market shows towards the pistachio product of Iran; the potential to introduce this valuable agricultural product of Iran to the world; demands the evaluation of its role in the trade and agriculture history of Iran.
The present article has been written, with the goal to furnish more data about the pistachio of Iran. Certainly, the primary recognition of pistachio in Iran, by man occurred after observation of the wild trees. According to the historical documents, the primary growth areas of wild pistachio trees, were in the northeast of Iran.
These growth areas, extended from west to the present Neishabur, and from east to Balkh, on both sides of Jeyhoon river. Since long time ago, the Iranians, by observing the wild pistachio trees and eating the fruit, have learned about the nutritious qualities of pistachio; such as hematopoiesis, livability, energizing, and inducing the intelligence. For example, as narrated by ancient sources, the non Iranian tribes, called Iranians as the pistachio eaters.
Pistachio in the City of Sirjan ( The Territory of Supreme Quality )
The city of Sirjan is located in the southwest of Kerman province; and is the second largest city of that province. Since it is located on the cross way that connects the four southern provinces; this city is distinguished from the other southern cities of the country. These issues have effected the economic growth of Sirjan.
In history, the ancientness of Sirjan refers to the Achaemenid; and since that period and the last two centuries, the mass cultivation of pistachio has been one of the most important economic scales of Sirjan; and old pistachio trees verify this argument.
The pleasant taste - wonderful flavor - beautiful , emerald color - and its certified health; distinguishes the Sirjan pistachio from other areas in Iran, that grow pistachio. All these advantages are approved by the experts and specialists of the pistachio business, all around the world.
The pistachio cultivation area in Sirjan is more than one hundred thousand hectares ( 100,000 ); sixty thousand hectares ( 60,000 ) are fructiferous and forty thousand hectares ( 40,000 ) are young trees, that will be fruitful within the next years.
At present, Sirjan produces over fifty thousand tons ( 50,000 ) annually; and has the second rank in the country, regarding production of pistachio. Existence of mechanized terminals for harvesting pistachio, either public or private, has resulted in supply of a hygienic product, in accordance with worldwide standards, to the market.
As quoted by the pistachio specialists and exporters, the contamination level of Sirjan’s pistachio, in connection to afla-toxin and the other contaminations, is lower than the permissible limits, accepted by the European Community ( 2 PPm ).
Existence of young gardens - proper irrigation - suitable attention - desirable climate - hygienic harvesting - adequate maintenance and storage are among the effective elements, resulting in low contamination, specially afla-toxin.
All these elements, create a suitable ground for entrance of Sirjan pistachio, in to the international pistachio business.
